PHEV Setup of the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger
Like any plug-in hybrid, the Ramcharger integrates gas and electric power. Underneath the hood is a 3.6L V6 engine with a 130-kilowatt-hour (kWh) onboard generator. On each axle is an Electric Drive Module (EDM) providing all-wheel drive traction. Powered by a 92-kWh liquid-cooled battery pack, a 250-kW EDM powers the front wheels, while a 238-kW EDM powers the rear. The battery pack is strategically placed underneath the rear floorboards to allow for a flat loadspace floor for easy cargo loading. The Ramcharger can be rapidly recharged by a 400-volt direct current fast charger, adding five miles of range per minute. The Ramcharger's PHEV setup offers a best-in-class total driving range of up to 690 miles!
How Does the Ramcharger's Powertrain Operate?
While all PHEVs operate similarly, the Ramcharger uses a unique process to maximize efficiency, driving range, and power. The process initiates with the mechanical power from the V6 engine being sent to the onboard generator. The generator then translates this mechanical energy into electricity, providing power for numerous purposes. The power from the onboard generator can be sent to the battery pack to recharge it when it is low. It can also be used to power the wheels in combination with the battery, providing the Ramcharger with its maximum power output. By using an onboard generator, the Ramcharger eliminates all mechanical linkage between the gas-powered engine and the wheels, maximizing efficiency. When driving on ideal road conditions, such as dry pavement, the Ramcharger utilizes a front wheel-end disconnect feature. This allows free spinning of the front wheels while the rear wheels continue to be driven. To provide enhanced traction when road conditions get tough, an electronic locking rear differential accompanies the rear axle's EDM, driving the rear wheels at the same time to maximize traction.
Ram 1500 Ramcharger Power in Numbers
The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger targets best-in-class performance with its all-new PHEV powertrain, providing 663 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque. This impressive power provides an exciting 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds, a class-leading 2,625 payload capacity, and a best-in-class towing capacity of up to 14,000 pounds. In addition to these capability numbers, the Ramcharger also delivers a smooth ride with active-leveling four-corner air suspension and independent multi-link rear suspension. The air suspension system allows for five ride height settings: Normal, Aero, Enter/Exit, Off-Road 1, and Off-Road 2. These settings allow the driver to customize the ride height based on the current situation. Ram used the STLA Frame platform, which was carefully developed for full-size electric vehicles using a body-on-frame design. Made of high-strength steel, the lightweight frame provides stiffness and durability for a high-quality ride. The STLA frame is designed for EVs as the mid-section is widened to accommodate the battery pack while protecting it with the frame rails.
