Allow Prestige CDJR to Assist You on Your Electric Vehicle Venture

If you're making the switch to the EV lifestyle, you must be wondering how owning an EV is different than owning an internal combustion engine vehicle in cold weather. Well, to start off, it's not much different. EV batteries in the cold are a lot like people; we don't like to be freezing cold. EV batteries have an ideal temperature range of 60-80 degrees. If you live in Colorado, well then you understand that during the winter season, temperatures can be very cold for long periods of time. Yes, EV batteries will be less efficient in cold weather, but not by much. The reason EV batteries perform better within a certain temperature range is that their power is generated by a chemical reaction that functions best within that range. Your battery expends extra energy to keep itself warm in cold temperatures. Prestige Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is here to give you the tips and information you need to save your EVs battery life during the winter seasons.

Warm Up Your EV with Your EV's Smartphone App

More often than not, your electric vehicle will come equipped with an integrated app. This app allows you to heat the cabin of your EV before you leave your house. This is a win-win situation. You will be able to hop into a warm cabin space and it will be saving the range of your vehicle in the cold weather. When warming up your vehicle, you are warming up your vehicle's battery. In doing so you are creating a more efficient temperature for your battery to function.

If You Can Park in the Garage

During the winter season, you should try to park your electric vehicle in a garage, if you have access to one. Or, when you are out and about you may have the option to park outside in the elements or inside a parking garage. If you have the choice you should choose to park your electric vehicle inside. This way it is a little warmer for the battery of your vehicle.

Plan Accordingly, Charging Your EV May Take More Time in Cold Temperatures

Your EV has a Battery Management System (BMS). This system regulates your vehicle's charging speed and is sort of like your battery's brain. The BMS is looking out for the safety of your battery. When the temperature drops, your thermal management system may limit your charging speeds to keep the battery safe. When your electric vehicle's battery warms up within the ideal temperature range, your BMS will loosen its charging limits.

Keep Your EVs Battery Charged Above 20%

During the winter season, your electric vehicle's Battery Management System will keep a percentage of your battery's power in reserve. This is done so the battery has some charge to warm itself up. Depending on the vehicle, this percentage varies. You can find out by referring to your vehicle's manual. A good thing to keep in mind is to try and keep your EVs battery charged above 20%.
