Introduced in 2021, the Jeep 4xe powertrain is the brand's first venture into the world of electric vehicles. The 4xe powertrain brings drivers a seamless blend of gas and electric power to enhance their driving experience while remaining eco-friendly. What is Jeep 4xe?
Before diving into the drive modes, it is important to understand what makes up the 4xe powertrain. Jeep 4xe, currently available for the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee lineups, is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain. It uses Jeep's 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine as its foundation. An electric motor that replaces the alternator is mounted to the front of the engine. A second electric motor is found inside the eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the torque converter. A 400-volt 17.3-kilowatt-hour rechargable battery pack powers these electric motors. With the 4xe system, both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee achieve a hefty 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.
Hybrid Mode
Being a hybrid, the 4xe powertrain defaults to Hybrid mode. When in Hybrid mode, the Jeep 4xe system seamlessly blends gas and electric power to provide maximum horsepower and instantaneous torque. Torque is instantly sent to the wheels from the electric motors when the gas pedal is pressed, eliminating the wait for mechanical power to be delivered. However, when in Hybrid mode, the 4xe system will supplement additional power using the turbocharged engine. In Hybrid mode, the Wrangler 4xe achieves a total driving range of up to 370 miles, while the Grand Cherokee 4xe's range is up to 470 miles.
Electric Mode
The next E-Selec drive mode for Jeep's 4xe system operates with nearly zero tailpipe emissions. Electric mode disables the turbocharged engine, powering the wheels solely with electric power instead. This allows drivers to save on fuel without sacrificing performance, as it provides instant torque with every press of the accelerator pedal, which also aids in the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe's off-road prowess. In fact, both models completed the fabled Rubicon Trail in Electric mode! With a full charge, Electric mode affords the Wrangler 4xe 21 miles of driving range, while the Grand Cherokee 4xe can be driven 25 miles on only electric power.
E-Save Mode
One of the best parts of a plug-in hybrid is that even when the battery is running low or depleted, you can still keep on driving. With E-Save mode, you can set your Jeep 4xe vehicle to run only using the turbocharged engine, disengaging the electric motors to save battery power for a later time. Additionally, you can select the Max Regen feature to optimize the system's regenerative braking power to recharge the battery while driving in E-Save mode. When power demand is low, when coasting or decelerating, for example, the engine will shut off until more power is requested.
