In recent years, the Grand Cherokee has become a symbol of safety within the Jeep lineup, arming drivers with a wide range of advanced safety features such as Active Lane Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blindspot Monitoring, and many more. The most advanced available safety feature, however, is Jeep's Active Driving Assist feature. This autonomous driving system ensures road safety with minimal driver input. Here at Prestige Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want our customers to know the vehicles we offer as well as we do. That's why, on this page, we'd like to teach you more about the Grand Cherokee's Active Driving Assist system and what it offers drivers. Read on to learn more!

How Does Jeep Active Driving Assist?

The Active Driving Assist (ADA) feature uses a series of sensors around the vehicle to monitor the road and the surrounding cars and respond by adjusting itself. Working with these sensors are the Adaptive Cruise Control, Blindspot Monitoring, and Active Lane Management features. The Adaptive Cruise Control feature allows you to set both a speed and a following distance, allowing the vehicle to maintain that speed when it is safe to do so and automatically adjusting the speed to maintain the safe following distance. Meanwhile, the Blindspot Monitoring and Active Lane Management features will coordinate to keep you centered in your lane. While still alerting you to vehicles in your blindspot with visual warnings, the system also detects your position within the lane markings and alerts you with a visual warning on the instrument cluster display and by vibrating the steering wheel. It will also gently steer the Grand Cherokee back into the center of its lane if corrective action isn't immediately taken.

How to Use Jeep Active Driving Assist?

In order to use Active Driving Assist, your hands must be on the steering wheel and remain there while the system is active. To activate ADA, push the ADA button on the right side of the steering wheel, which depicts a steering wheel between two lane lines. On the Grand Cherokee's digital gauge cluster, the ADA display image, showing a steering wheel centered between road lines with thick lines going across, will show up in white until the system is fully engaged, at which time the image will turn green. If Adaptive Cruise Control was set before activating ADA, the previously set speed and following distance will remain the same. Meanwhile, if Adaptive Cruise Control is not active, it will be activated along with ADA. Once your desired speed is reached, simply press the cruise control set button and adjust the following distance setting as needed. The lines going across the ADA image represent the following distance setting, and a line will be added with each press of the distance setting button.

What is Hands-Free Active Driving Assist?

Hands-Free Active Driving Assist is, you guessed it, a version of ADA that does not require your hands to be on the steering wheel. However, the system still requires you to remain alert and focused on your surroundings and will ensure you do so using a steering wheel-mounted camera and audio and visual warnings. If the driver does not return attention to the road immediately, they will be prompted to take control of the steering wheel. If this does not happen, the vehicle will automatically be brought to a standstill in the current lane and make a call with the SOS system. This can be overridden by pressing the gas or brake pedal while grabbing the steering wheel and returning your eyes to the road. Hands-Free ADA requires an active subscription through Uconnect Connected Services, a continuous and reliable cell connection to the cloud, and an open-sky GPS connection. One upgrade that Hands-Free ADA users get is the ability to autonomously change lanes. Using the exterior sensors used for blindspot monitoring and active lane management, the system will detect when it is safe to change lanes. Simply tap or fully activate the turn signal in the direction of the lane you want to enter. An arrow on the corresponding side of the ADA image on the gauge cluster will illuminate yellow and turn green when it is safe to make the lane change. You can cancel the lane change request by tapping the turn signal in the opposite direction or unlatching it. If the system deems it safer to change lanes, the cancellation request will be ignored. The system also uses map data to detect upcoming sharp curves and will automatically slow the vehicle down to safely make the corner.

When Can I Use Jeep Active Driving Assist?

Certain conditions must be met for ADA to activate. These include hands on the steering wheel, driver's seat belt buckled, turn signal not activated, visible lane markings, and no trailer is connected. Additionally, ADA should not be used in driving conditions such as bad weather, construction zones, urban settings, or poorly maintained roads. The system also does not respond to traffic lights, signs, or cross traffic, so be sure to remain alert to your surroundings when using the ADA system. Finally, autonomous driving systems, such as Active Driving Assist, are only to be used on approved roadways. Fortunately, more than 125,000 miles of North American highways have approved autonomous driving usage, and more highways are being approved each year.
